What is MySQL?
MySQL, in plain English.
MySQL is a database, an organized store for the information your website needs to remember. On a WordPress site, every page, post, user account, order and setting lives in MySQL. When a visitor opens a page, the site asks the database for the right pieces and puts them together.
Think of it as a very fast, very tidy set of spreadsheets that can answer thousands of questions at once. Each table holds one kind of thing, such as customers or listings, and the tables can be linked together. It first appeared in 1995 and the Community Edition is free to use.
For you, the database matters for two reasons. Speed: a well-organized database keeps pages loading quickly as your content grows. Safety: it holds your business data, so backups and careful access are part of how we look after a site.
