What is 301 Redirect?

Also called: permanent redirect

A 301 redirect sends visitors and Google from an old web address to a new one for good, so you keep your rankings and traffic after a change.

A 301 redirect is an instruction on your website that says a page has moved to a new address permanently. When someone clicks the old link, they land on the new page automatically. Search engines read the same instruction and treat the new page as the replacement for the old one.

This matters most during a redesign or a move to a new platform. Every page on your current site has earned some trust with Google, and other sites may link to it. If those old addresses stop working, visitors hit an error page and the ranking you built can quietly disappear. Redirects carry that value over to the new pages.

A good redirect plan maps each old page to the most relevant new page, not just to the home page. We build that map before a site launches and test it afterward, so a customer who bookmarked your service page still finds it and your search traffic does not take a hit.

Example
A plumbing company moves from an old website to a new one and redirects its old drain cleaning page to the new drain cleaning page, so the search ranking and the bookmarks keep working.
