What is WooCommerce?
WooCommerce, in plain English.
WooCommerce is a free plugin that turns a WordPress website into an online store. It covers the everyday jobs of selling: product pages, a shopping cart, checkout, shipping rules, tax settings and a record of every order.
The store lives on your own site and your own hosting, so your products and customer list stay with you. Payments run through a provider such as Stripe or PayPal. The core plugin costs nothing to download, and a big library of add-ons, some paid, covers extras like memberships and special shipping.
WooCommerce launched in 2011 and is developed and supported by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com. Compared with a hosted store builder, you take on a little more setup and upkeep. In return you get far more say over how the shop looks, works and grows.
