What is Alt Text?
Also called: alternative text, alt tag
Alt text is a short written description of an image. It helps people using screen readers and helps search engines understand your pictures.
Alt text is a line of text attached to an image in your website's code. It is not visible on the page for most visitors. It is read aloud by screen readers for people who are blind or have low vision, and it shows in place of the image if the picture fails to load.
Search engines also use alt text to understand what a picture shows, which can help your images appear in image search and reinforce what the page is about. Good alt text describes the image plainly, such as 'technician installing a heat pump outside a home', rather than stuffing in keywords.
Alt text is one of the simplest accessibility and SEO fixes, yet many sites skip it or leave file names like 'IMG_4032'. Decorative images, such as a background flourish, should be marked so screen readers can skip them. We write alt text as part of every build and audit.
Example
A photo of your team on a job site gets the alt text 'Stack crew installing solar panels on a Reno home' instead of a blank field.
