What is Two-Factor Authentication?
Also called: 2FA, multi-factor authentication, MFA
Two-factor authentication adds a second check, like a code from your phone, to your password, so a stolen password alone cannot get into your accounts.
Two-factor authentication, or 2FA, requires two proofs of identity to log in. The first is usually your password. The second is something you have, such as a code from an authenticator app, a text message or a physical security key.
It matters because passwords get stolen, guessed or reused. Even a strong password can leak in a breach at some other service. With 2FA, an attacker who has the password still cannot get in without the second factor, which blocks most account takeovers.
Turn it on for everything important: your website admin, hosting, domain registrar, email, ad accounts and banking. Authenticator apps and security keys are safer than text messages. We enable 2FA on the sites and systems we build and manage.
Example
Logging in to your website's admin area asks for your password and then a six digit code from your phone.
