What is Authorize.net?
Authorize.net, in plain English.
Authorize.net is a payment gateway, the service that connects a website's checkout to the banks that approve a card payment. It handles online checkout with cards, bank transfers called eChecks, and digital wallets, along with phone orders, invoices and recurring billing.
It is one of the older names in online payments, and it says its features are backed by Visa. That history is why many established businesses already have an account, and why a lot of store software, including Magento, WooCommerce and Paymattic, can connect to it.
For a new project, we usually compare it against Stripe, which is easier to build into custom applications. Authorize.net makes the most sense when a business is already set up with it and wants to keep its existing account, or when its bank or accounting setup depends on it.
