What is Joomla?
Joomla, in plain English.
Joomla is a free, open source content management system, the software that runs a website's pages, menus, users and content. It is made by a volunteer community, with the project's legal home at Open Source Matters, Inc.
Businesses use it for corporate sites, intranets, online magazines, shops, schools and non-profits. The project highlights multilingual support, accessibility and flexible add-ons. Compared with WordPress, Joomla has more built into the core, but a smaller community and fewer themes, plugins and developers to draw on.
That matters for you in a practical way. A Joomla site can serve you well, but finding help and extensions is harder than for WordPress. Today most of the Joomla work we see is existing sites that need maintenance, or a decision about whether to move to something more widely supported.
