What is Pusher?
Pusher, in plain English.
Pusher is a real-time messaging service. Normally a web page only shows new information when you reload it. With Pusher, the application can send a message to every connected visitor the moment something happens, and the page updates on its own.
Think of a notification that appears as it is sent, a dashboard count that ticks up while you watch, or a status that flips from pending to confirmed without a refresh. Pusher's Channels product also supports private channels, so only the right people receive certain messages, and presence features that show who is currently online.
Building this yourself means running always-on connections, which are fiddly to scale and secure. Pusher runs that part as a service, so your application can feel live and responsive without extra servers for you to pay for or maintain.

Why we use Pusher.
We use Pusher for the live parts of our custom applications, such as status updates in Reno Restaurant Guide. It adds that responsive feel people expect from modern software without us running and securing a real-time system of our own.
Updates Instantly
Visitors see changes the moment they happen, with no reloading.
Private When Needed
Messages can be limited to specific users, such as one account's owner.
Nothing to Maintain
No always-on servers for you to pay for or look after.
