Custom Software
What is Off-the-Shelf Software?
Also called: packaged software, COTS
Off-the-shelf software is ready-made software sold to many customers. It is quick to start but may force you to change how you work.
Off-the-shelf software is a product built for a broad market and sold or subscribed to by many businesses. QuickBooks, Mailchimp and most project management tools are examples. You get a tested product with support and can start quickly.
It is often the right answer. If a standard tool does the job, use it. The trouble starts when your process does not fit. You may adopt workarounds, pay for features you do not need, run parallel spreadsheets or hit limits as you grow. Costs can also rise as you add users.
Between off-the-shelf and fully custom there is a middle path: use standard tools for common jobs and connect them with integrations, building custom software only where it creates an advantage. We help you decide which parts of your business deserve custom work.
Example
A business uses a standard accounting package but builds a custom scheduling app because no tool matched how its crews work.
