What is SaaS?

Software as a service, or SaaS, is software delivered over the internet and paid for on a recurring basis. You log in through a browser or app, and the provider hosts, secures and updates the system. Gmail, QuickBooks Online and Mailchimp are familiar examples.

For most businesses, SaaS is an easy way to get capable tools without servers or IT staff. The tradeoffs are that you rent rather than own, costs can grow with users, and you depend on the vendor's features, pricing and uptime. Moving your data out later can be difficult.
