What is Plugin?
Also called: extension, add-on
A plugin is an add-on that gives a website a feature, like forms or SEO tools. Useful, but each one needs updates and can add risk or slowness.
A plugin is a package of code that adds a feature to a platform, most commonly WordPress. Contact forms, SEO tools, backups, security scanning and online stores are often provided by plugins. They let you add functionality without building it from scratch.
The upside is speed and lower initial effort. The downside is that every plugin is code written by someone else that you must keep updated. Outdated or abandoned plugins are a leading way sites get hacked, and too many can slow a site and cause conflicts.
Use plugins from reputable makers, install only what you need and remove what you stop using. For key features, consider whether custom code is cleaner. We choose plugins carefully, keep them updated and monitor them as part of our WordPress and hosting care.
Example
A site adds a booking plugin to take appointments, and the host keeps it updated to avoid security problems.
