What is Clerk?
Clerk, in plain English.
Clerk is a user management service. It handles the parts of an application that deal with people: signing up, logging in, resetting a password, and keeping each person's session secure. It also offers multi-factor authentication, where a second check such as a code confirms it is really you.
It includes ready-made sign-in screens that can be styled to match your brand, and tools for organizations, where a team shares an account and members have different levels of access. That matters for any application with more than one kind of user, such as customers, staff and administrators.
Login is one of the easiest places to get security wrong, and a mistake there can expose customer information. Clerk is a dedicated service built around that single job and kept up to date by a team focused on it, so your application does not depend on sign-in code written from scratch.

Why we use Clerk.
When an application needs accounts, we use Clerk rather than building login ourselves. In Reno Restaurant Guide it separates visitors, restaurant owners and staff, and controls who can reach which pages. It gets you a safe sign-in sooner, with our time spent on your features.
Safer Logins
Sign-in security is handled by a specialist service, not code written from scratch.
Right Access, Per Person
Owners, staff and customers each see only what they should.
Branded Sign-In
Login screens match your look, so accounts feel like part of your product.
